Think Whitewater.

A good friend and I are headed down to northern oregon from April 5-9 and were wondering if anybody down there would mind showing us some lines, or at least letting us know what is flowing at the time. We are III-IV boaters and would love to learn more about oregon paddling.

I would be able to hook up on the 8th or 9th probably.
I live in Portland.
Also check out www.pdxkayaker.org
It is the local boaters forum and you can find people on there.
Also check out oregonkayaking.net, combine that with soggy sneakers and you will not have any trouble knowing what to paddle.

cheers

Carter and I have been reading up on the portland area and we think that we are interested in trying to get on Lake creek. We have heard that it is a great play run. I have a new playboat and can't wait to use it on a river. Also is Bob's hole going to be in next weekend?

Lake Creek is undoubtedly the best play in the region, but it's over 3 hours from Portland, and is best with a lot of water.

Bob's Hole itself doesn't really come in anymore, but it's next to Joe Bob's, which is nice at 2500-3500 CFS. There is another wave above Carter Bridge that is decent at 1600-2000 CFS. The river forecast (which is wrong half the time) can be seen at http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?TLYO3 . Weather at http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=9... .

I'm not thinking Lake Creek will be at an optimal level for you, but it might get up toward where it's worth running, at least. Best bet for play is probably to pray that the Clack gets up to 2800 or more and Joe Bob's comes in.

On either Saturday or Sunday, I'll be doing a practice run or two on Canyon Creek, Washington, with some folks in preparation for the April 12th Canyon Creek race. Run description at http://www.oregonkayaking.net/creeks/canyon_wash/canyon_wash.html and race details at http://www.northwestcreekcomp.org/ . The run is a IV at lower flows, and one of the best creek runs around.

Looking forward to hooking up for some boating if we can.

Well, I am a little dissapointed that this thread didn't get more attention. We are headed down tomorrow night and I don't know exactly what we will be boating. We will be bringing both our playboats and our creek boats. I thought that there would be more oregon boaters on this site, but alas there doesn't seem to be that many. Thanks Erik and Willie. We will definately look you guys up when we get down there.

Yeah, seems like the site is still building steam/community...haven't seen a lot of other PDX boaters here.

The flow update is grim, as I'm sure you know. You're probably looking at "summer" runs like White Salmon, Clackamas, etc...depending on your tolerance for boniness, of course. Even at these paltry flows, some folks will bounce down Canyon Creek and have plenty of fun.

Also, in talking with some area boaters, I've learned that Bob's Hole proper (as opposed to Joe Bob's) is seeming to come in better this year, and at lower flows. Might be workable for you this weekend.

Anyhow, feel free to give me a holler.
