Wood strip sea kayak in fiberglass shell. Constructing them is a recent hobby I've taken up and if anyone has questions, please feel free to inquire. This one is 18' long, weighs approximately 49 lbs, has a cockpit size of 32 x 18 and can hold a pad…
As a newcomer (hobbyist) to building wood strip watercraft, I completed construction of a wood strip sea kayak late last summer. I've found this hobby to be a good way to pass the time during the winter but also am getting an interest to do something a little more commercially with this hobby. Initially, to just cover some of my material costs so I can continue funding my hobby.
Basically, I was wondering if anyone in this network thinks there would be a market for this type of customized watercraft and where? Part art-work with true functionality it's not off-the-rack cheap, but as well I am not a professional either. Shown are a few basic pictures to just give you an idea and feel free to contact me if interested in more specifics? Not being a paddler myself, I wouldn't know what to compare it to as far as handling characteristics but I can direct someone to that information. In its maiden voyage, it seemed to handle nicely, but again that was my first time in a kayak! Anyhow, here are a few kayak specifics on the one shown here and I'd just be interested in thoughts anyone would care to share on this subject.
Hand-crafted sea kayak based on Nick Schade's Guillemot-L design.
Made from lightweight cedar with inlays of cherry and walnut, this composite built kayak is encapsulated in a clear shell of 6 oz. fiberglass. Coated with 6 coats of marine varnish on the deck and 4 coats on the hull provides for UV protection.
Coming in at just under 18', it weighs approximately 49 lbs., has hatch covers fore and aft with an inside securing system, adjustable foot braces, seat and backrest, and holes (fore and aft) for carrying handles to be positioned. Cockpit size is approximately 32" long by 18" wide.
