About Me:
I've been paddling for about 15 years. Started on the Potomac in an old Dancer under the stern tutelage of Eric "Ordeal-boy" Brooks. Spent my formative years in a boat on the Potomac, and mountains of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Western Maryland. Taught Jimmy Blakeney how to roll, and was so disgusted when he completely surpassed me and went pro that I fled to Japan.

Spent nearly 5 years there with my lovely wife Monica paddling the chossy but gorgeous rivers of Nippon and snowboarding in the mountains of Nagano. (Minnasan, genki neh! Watashi no nihongo mo bochi bochi ni narimashita. Da kedo, gambarimasu...)

My wife Monica and I are now back in the Washington D.C. area. I started KayakMind about five years ago, but had to take a break during grad school and my first year and a half as a reporter for The Baltimore Sun.

Things have quieted down and KayakMind retooled and ready to go full tilt. Jimi B's on board and we are stoked.

Basic Wilderness Survival Gear

I just published an article on basic wilderness survival gear inspired by my recent paddling trip to Quebec. I had a lot of time to think about what I should have brought with me to a remote take out to what for a group of paddlers.

It's not an exhaustive or authoritative list. Bu it's mine. Check it out at my site STRAY at:

Quebec paddling trip

Seven of us hit a number of rivers in Quebec earlier this month: the Lachine rapids on the St. Lawrence; the upper and lower sections of the Malbaie; the Seven Sisters of the Rouge; and a few others. Great, great rivers. Above are a few photos I posted in the gallery from the trip.

I didn't take too many photos, because I mostly shot video with a Canon 7D and a GoPro HD Hero. I'll post the video later, once I get some time to edit it. Continue

Stream Flow Basics

Whitewater paddlers love numbers. Get a group of them together and inevitably you’ll hear statements like, “ it was big, like 5.6” or “it sucked, 600 cfs”, or “I was paddling Rapid 9 with my 35 degree, 198,in my 1.5, at 600 cfs - that’s 1.2 at the bridge.”

While this numerical shorthand certainly speeds up communication between those in the know,… Continue

Learn to Paddle Like the Karate Kid

The movie The Karate Kid taught that to get skills you have to break it down. No one goes straight to the Crane Technique. First comes wax on, wax off, painting the fence, careful concentration, and getting the crap knocked out you a few times. Mr. Miyagi’s lessons hold true for kayaking too. Polish the pieces, then put the puzzle together.… Continue

Hey Chris! I just got a Blackberry (because I'm a nerd) and there's an app for Facebook. Any chance of getting one for Kayakmind? I'm going to suggest this to AW too. That would be sweet to have a mobile app to keep track of our favorite rivers, right? Or is that just me being a nerd again?

Thanks for the info Chris! I checked out that Potomac Paddlers group, and I'll probably put a post up on there to see if anyone would be willing to show me the river.

Anyone you know that you could recommend that's still in that area?

Thanks!

Hey Chris, How's things goin? The last message you sent me, you told me to drop you a line if I'm ever in the D.C. area, and you'd show me the Potomac..."At 4:06pm on July 18, 2008, Chris Emery said… If your ever in the Washington D.C. area, drop me a line. The Potomac can be a fun beginner/intermediate river to mess around on."

I'm planning on being in D.C. with some friends ( None of them Kayak) in April,...possibly April 3rd - 5th/6th. That saturday or sunday would work great for me if you'd still be up for showing me down the river!

I'm a pretty solid class III/III+ boater now, with a solid roll; C to C, and also the Sweep, I also have strong off side rolls now too. Besides Westwater, I really haven't gone over any real significant drops. I'm willing to learn though!

Let me know if you think you'd be available. Thanks!

Hey Chris,

Congrats on the election down there! It must feel good to know that you will finally have bush out in a 100 days! Hey, what happened to the other site. I thought that I got a request for someone to be a friend, but then I could not find the site?

Hey, cool site. Japan sounds cool. I might head there next year in Oct. for Taijitsu training. Would be cool to hook up with some paddlers while I'm there.

Chris: I'm hitting the Falls tomorrow, not sure whether I'm running the VA or MD lines. I'm going to try to get out this weekend if possible. I don't tend turn on a computer during the weekend, so if you make it back and want to get on the water, give me a call at home -- 301-588-0762. Cheers. david
